In this new novel Adrian Plass, bestselling author of the Sacred Diary series, explores what might happen if you could book an appointment with a doctor who could help you with your deepest spiritual wounds, not just a headache.
In a dark clearing in the woods, a man screams in despair. Will anyone hear?
The Shadow Doctor isn't like other doctors. This man can see deep into your soul, and the cures he prescribes aren't available from the local pharmacy. If you have fears you just cannot face, wounds you can't even bear to remember - if you've been abused, ignored, damaged by all life throws at you - the Shadow Doctor is here to help.
Jack's grandmother has died recently, leaving him a letter - and when he opens it, a business card with the Shadow Doctor's number on it falls out. In his life and his faith, Jack likes to deal in certainties - but when he finally calls the Doc, what he thought he knew starts turning upside down. The Doc never says or does what Jack expects, and somehow that seems to be just what people need.
But as they get to know each other better, Jack starts to realise that the Shadow Doctor has shades of his own, and the work of helping others may be the only thing keeping him afloat. Can the Doc beat back his own demons long enough to help those who need him most?
I enjoyed the read and found the characters are very human and likeable.
