This companion volume to OS 304 (1994) completes the edition. This new volume contains an account of the original Latin texts from which the Old English translation derives. It considers the translation methods used, evidence of authorship, orthography and language, and textual transmission. The Old English translations of the Latin Gospels are considered to be one of the major literary and cultural achievements of the late Anglo-Saxon period. This is the first modern edition of those translations. It includes an index of the biblical passages described and a glossary.
Immense display of scholarship ... this veritable mountain of scholarship (followed by a beautiful glossary and Latin/OE wordlist), is an altogether welcome addition to the top shelf.
