Robert Churchill, who died in 1958, was the latest, perhaps the last, of the great gunmakers of London. He was as much a legend in his own specialty, in his time and in his way, as that other Churchill whose name he shared. For nearly fifty years he was the gun expert consulted by the police and gave evidence in almost every important murder trial involving a shooting in this century. He pioneered the identification of bullets in criminal cases and, in the world of sport, introduced the specially designed short-barreled game guns with which he was associated throughout his career. But Churchill the gunmaker, Churchill the ballistics expert, was only part of the man. He was also the greatest shooting instructor of his day. He was the first to teach the system of shooting moving targets, not by arbitrary calculations of "forward allowance" but by trusting the sureness of the eye and smoothness of the body action to being the gun on to the mark.
