This 11th volume of the Gladstone Diaries deals with the period from July 1883 to December 1886. Together with the 10th volume it covers his second and third administrations, and the series of crises that occurred, such as the Land League Campaign and Phoenix Park murders.
'though the diary served a variety of private functions, its public and scholarly value has been teased out through the meticulous editorial work of Colin Matthew'
