Provides a detailed picture of the Spanish settlement landscape of New Mexico during the period from the beginning of colonization in 1598 up to 1680. Despite scarcity of documentation, Barrett has pulled together the disparate material available from collections of published documents as well as genealogical and archaeological findings to craft a fine- grained analysis of the location of Spanish landholdings in the context of existing Pueblo village lands and the resources of the natural environment.
