"While the middle aged female protagonist is a fairly common figure in crime literature, she doesn't always get fully involved in the action. I wanted a heroine who did, believing she was doing right but making things worse as she learns the difficulties and consequences of revenge. And in the end she has to follow the path she has started on to its inevitable conclusion. Lastly I wanted her to be a real woman, passionate, strong but also vulnerable, not a female in a male role and complex as all people are."
