Mariana P. Candido is the Winship Distinguished Research Professor of History, Emory University. She is the author of Wealth Land and Property in Angola: A History of Dispossession, Slavery, and Inequality (2022); An African Slaving Port and the Atlantic World (2013); and Fronteras de esclavización: esclavityd, comercio e identidad en Benguela, 1780-1850 (2011). She has co-edited African Women in the Atlantic World. Property, Vulnerability and Mobility, 1680-1880 (2019); Laços Atlânticos: África e africanus durante a era do comércio transatlântico de escravos (2017) and Crossing Memories: Slavery and the African Diaspora (2011). Benjamin N. Lawrance is Professor of History at the University of Arizona, USA. He is the author of Amistad's Orphans: An Atlantic Story of Children, Slavery, and Smuggling (2014). He is also the co-editor of several books, including Adjudicating Refugee and Asylum Status: The Role of Witness, Expertise, and Testimony (2015; with Galya Ruffer) and Trafficking in Slavery's Wake: Law and the Experience of Women and Children in Africa (2012; with Richard L.
