Zusammenfassung

Denny is nine weeks out of the Army, freshly hired at a county jail control room, and still operating on the soft unexamined faith of the recently discharged - the belief that institutions are fundamentally serious, and that the seriousness flows downward from somewhere, from some room where the adults are kept.

There is no such room.

What he finds instead is a supervisor building an OnlyFans management empire out of the supervisor's office, a coworker locked in a twenty-year feud with her own father-in-law two consoles away, a woman working through the worst divorce of her life on the facility's only outside line, and forty monitors - a dozen of them dark - meant to be the only thing standing between two hundred incarcerated people and chaos, watched, on a good day, by absolutely no one. Denny presses his uniform like he's defusing ordnance. He learns the radio. He fixes the dead cameras with his bare hands. And every single day, he waits for someone with actual authority to notice that the room is on fire.

Then, on an ordinary Thursday, something happens on a monitor nobody but Denny is watching - and in the six seconds it takes him to call it in, everything about who is actually running that jail becomes impossible to unsee. What follows is an investigation that will ask Denny to choose between the easy lie that protects everyone, including himself, and the harder truth that might end his career before it's properly begun - and a jail lieutenant who has spent thirty years waiting for exactly one person to tell it to him straight.

Jail is a darkly funny, quietly devastating literary novel about institutional rot, the particular loneliness of being the only competent person in a room, and what it actually means - not in a speech, not in a policy memo, but in one six-second decision - to do the job right when nobody is watching and nobody will ever know the difference. It is a story for anyone who has ever left a structured, demanding life for a civilian world that turned out to have no structure at all, and discovered, the hard way, that the adults you're waiting for might have to be you.

For readers of "The Office" crossed with Orange Is the New Black, workplace fiction with real teeth, and anyone who has ever wondered what actually happens in the room behind the cameras.

Michela Denning is a non-binary author writing across horror, science fiction, literary fiction, and romance - a body of work spanning small-town supernatural mythology, grounded contemporary fiction, speculative fiction, and sensual romance exploring power, surrender, and intimacy. Michela served eight years in Air Force Security Forces and twelve more as a dispatcher for the Salt Lake County Jail before medical retirement turned them toward fiction full-time. They live in the Inland Empire region of Southern California.
